Happy Hour(s)

I managed to catch up with a friend the other night for a happy hour drink and burger, $5 burger mind you, at The Attic's all day happy hour. So its not really happy hour and I don't think the beers were discounted either, but any burger on the menu for $5 is a deal.

Catching the end of happy hour at 6:30 is impressive considering I've worked until that time for the last three years, taking the evening shift while spending the mornings training in my previous occupation of professional cyclist. I haven't really switched out of that time frame as I moved on from cycling for multiple reasons, most of which involve recreation.

Like the other morning I was up at 3:45AM to drive up to Berthoud Pass for Dawn Patrol. Bryan, Dave, as well as Stu Gillespie 1 and 2 both started hiking the west ridge around 5:30AM and we were back in town by 10:30 after three laps of skiing. Note: there are two Stu Gillespie's in Boulder...at The University of Colorado...in Law School. Weird.

There is nothing like watching the sunrise at 12,000ft. All is right in the world. And the snow was well worth it.

It Might Not Be All Bad

Now losing your job stinks, its scary, hurts an employees self-esteem, and puts many lives at a crossroads. The auto industry has been hit really hard in the U.S. with thousands of jobs being erased, and putting lots of skill laborers out of work. At least Chrysler is taking care of some of its employees.

The green initiatives that will be coming through the tube over the next few months should aid those industries though and alleviate some strain.

We shall see.

The Greatest Daily Show ever?

I spent the show laughing my ass off. I hope you can enjoy it as well.

The sun has been blazing on Boulder and the trails are dry so its ride time. I'm not sure I really like the lack of winter time, and I want to ski so I may have to retreat to parts north for some of the white stuff.

Downsized

You know you are in trouble when you downsize from a real car to a shopping cart.

However, that might be the reality for some right now. I believe the belt tightening has hit everyone in some shape or form and the time thrift is upon us.

What interests me most is how people will deal will it and what will remain of our previous lifestyles. Do you skip on your favorite but lush dinners, or do you cook in to save for them later? Will you skimp on new gear or find the one year old used car instead of paying a premium on the new one.
Design too, will become more resourceful where salvaged materials form your next idea and supersize your creativity.

Because the value of building something yourself will always overshadow its cost.

The Name Game

Do you every wonder how parents or potential business owners come up with the names for their kids, companies, stores, etc? It probably involves a lot of brainstorming a ton of names, crazy ones in fact, then taking the core mission or purpose or family genealogy to break it down into a pile of keepers with the rest coming to rest in the trash.

In the case of company names, you have to think of all kinds of conotations that your store front, concrete or otherwise will attract. For instance if you have a publicly traded company you don't name it Wang. If your last name is Trickle, you don't name your child Richard, unless of course you know he will race NASCAR for a living, in which case it is perfactly acceptable. Or hilarious.

So I am totally at a loss for a man with the last name of Power naming his child Richard. Its an old company, 1950's, that I've never heard of, and possibly with good reason...

New Year, New Laughs

It doesn't matter I didn't find it, but HTATBL did, and that's all that matters.

I was going to make a video too, but no one has written a song called I want a job.

The new year started off with a muffled bang and awkward sounds of turning over on a air mattress. I was graciously invited to travel to Crested Butte for the weekend, staying just a few blocks from downtown CB and one of the better burrito joints around. Our hosts were super kind and the skiing was so sweet.

With a few new books and job prospects on hand it is a busy transition back to the daily grind. With my particular version becoming more and more common with businesses tanking left and right. I'm pedaling furiously to keep up, but I think I just need to get off my tricycle and get onto a proper sized bicycle.
