The Beauty of Free Market

Intelectual Property, or IP, is quickly becoming the most hotly contested battle grounds in the technology and entertainment industry. The history here is deep and has been twisted into numerous directions in the last year as companies clamor to remain on top of their competitive industries meanwhile overseas manufacturing has led to numerous rip-offs in industrial booming countries. If this subject sparks an interest to you check out www.techdirt.com and do some IP searches to get some solid reading material.

Techdirt recently posted this article about the fashion industry following the entertainment industries history for fighting down knock offs that actually boosted their sales and market awareness. To put it briefly, imposing IP is only effective in so far as the property is to initially protect the designer. The point of IP and patents is not to say an idea is one persons forever, but rather to protect it while the designer can grow the idea into a business and product line.

I would liken it to a 7 year old taking the kickball out of the game and saying "only I can play with this ball." The ball isn't so useful anymore.
